Here’s another photo of John from the workshop I attended on Saturday in Sydney.

I was really challenged by this workshop because it wasn’t about taking photos of strangers on the street – which is more in my comfort zone and it wasn’t taking photos of people’s faces. It was about taking photos of people in their environment and so I had to be more deliberate, to think more about composition and leading lines and the position of the subject and where their gaze rests.

And then there were the technical decisions – taking into account the quality of the light, the quantity of light and the direction of it – and setting the camera accordingly. There’s a lot to this photography caper!

I sit here wondering if I’ll be able to sleep tonight. My excitement is building because tomorrow I’m going to be learning more about portrait photography. Yay!! Thanks to Tim for this opportunity.

Here’s a portrait I took of Lisa, who stopped me in the street the other day and asked if she could take a selfie with me. Strange, but quite lovely.

I came across Angelina in the city, sitting on an upturned milk crate, a typewriter in front her and a sign saying “I’ll write you a poem while you wait”.

Now that’s an offer I couldn’t refuse!

Angelina asked me for a word and as I’m doing a Faces of Melbourne project on Instagram, that became my ‘word’. So here is Angelina’s poem:

Faces of Melbourne

A sea of people in the corners
of a chessboard city,
passing lives,
drifting stories,
and suddenly – Poetry.
A gift of the briefest meeting
A moment of contact, sweeter
for its fleeting nature.
It is our faces, here
in the place where worlds collide
down the length of the patient Yarra
the ancient dirt beneath
our concrete kingdom,
and we.

The theme for this week’s 52 week project was A Flower … yep, just one. Because I take a lot of flower photos, I thought I’d try something different.

I spot her as we walk through Myer on our way to Melbourne Central, and quickly say to Tim, “I’m going to follow her”.

But I couldn’t, not without offering to help carry her (very) heavy bag. She talked to me of her son, who had died recently, a (very) heavy burden for her to bear, and of her stroke which had caused her to forget things. We walked a few steps, stopped to talk, and walked on.

She used to work in Myer, many years ago – her first job after arriving in Australia from Malta in 1958. Her father had a Humber and would park out the front of Myer, go to the markets and then pick her up when she finished work at lunchtime.

I heard many stories, always returning to the death of her son four years before at the age of 39. She showed me photos, of him as an adult and as a child. She laughed fondly, before her eyes filled again with sadness.

I asked if I could take her photo, and she took my hand to signify her version of yeah sure.

This is Josette.

There he sat, near the library, in the sun. I walked past, saw him, walked back.

Repeat.

Oh, why not?

Yeah sure, he said, with a brilliant smile that reached his eyes.

This is Sharo – yes, just like my name but without the ‘n’. We laughed at that.

164: Faces of Melbourne #12

There was a motley crowd gathered outside the State Library; some in the group were taking photos, some were chatting, others were standing back waiting for something to happen.

It was a camera group – a film camera group – who get together regularly to photograph the city and its people.

He said yeah sure unreservedly and told me all about the camera club and the facilities they have available. You should pop in some time, he said.

This is Ashton.
