Walking down our street yesterday I noticed a florist shop where there hadn’t been one the week before. I decided to go in. Kellie, the director of Fig and Bloom, has an online business and was convinced by friends to open a shop as well and on Tuesday she did just that. The flowers are beautiful, and what I liked best of all was that I could buy single flowers. So I bought two and spent a lovely few hours photographing one of them in the light coming in through the kitchen window.
This image has more of a domestic feel than I usually go for, with the flyscreen in the background and the edge of the bottle in view, but there’s a certain appeal to it.
I took this photo on the sly – which isn’t my usual style. I usually like to make sure that my subjects know I’m photographing them … so when I checked it to see what he looked like on camera, I asked if I could take his photo. He shrugged – I’m not sure if he was noncommittal or just didn’t understand me. I asked his name and he shrugged again. I like to think that he didn’t speak English rather than him wanting to ignore me.
But he has a great face, doesn’t he?
There’s another photo of him on my Instagram account.
Tim bought me some sunflowers and so I spent Saturday morning exploring them photographically. Here’s one of the many shots that resulted from that exploration.
I turn my attention away from flowers today to focus on my other favourite: portraits.
Alison is usually found behind the camera – you can see some of her work here – and is generally uncomfortable with being in front of the camera, especially my camera.
But yesterday Alison offered herself up for a photo shoot, and I’m thrilled that she did. I don’t often do photo shoots and so it was a real learning experience for me. Alison is funny and thoughtful and insightful and resilient and courageous. I think I have a photo that shows each of these characteristics … here are just some of them.
My Faces of Melbourne series has continued on Instagram (Sharon on Instagram if you’re on Insta) but I thought I’d share this face here on my blog too.
This is my favourite face!
