Calla lily … a study in subtlety – and shape – and dancing …

Robbing the flower of all its colour doesn’t rob it of its beauty – it just allows us to see differently. There’s a lesson in there I’m sure.

It’s getting close to dahlia time again … until I can shoot this year’s crop, here’s one from last year.

Staying with the Sydney theme for another day … although, really, this image could have come from anywhere. All over the world people rage against injustice, and express their rage in different ways. And some photograph the man who covers himself in a sign, while others photograph the photographer.
What this image doesn’t show is busker Joe Moore, playing in the Pitt St mall … the music this man was joyfully dancing to. The dancing man signifies balance to me – the injustice he’s railing against hasn’t dampened his spirit – he can still dance with enthusiastic abandon while sending passers-by a message.

I sit here wondering if I’ll be able to sleep tonight. My excitement is building because tomorrow I’m going to be learning more about portrait photography. Yay!! Thanks to Tim for this opportunity.
Here’s a portrait I took of Lisa, who stopped me in the street the other day and asked if she could take a selfie with me. Strange, but quite lovely.

There are others that have no choice.

I turn my attention away from flowers today to focus on my other favourite: portraits.
Alison is usually found behind the camera – you can see some of her work here – and is generally uncomfortable with being in front of the camera, especially my camera.
But yesterday Alison offered herself up for a photo shoot, and I’m thrilled that she did. I don’t often do photo shoots and so it was a real learning experience for me. Alison is funny and thoughtful and insightful and resilient and courageous. I think I have a photo that shows each of these characteristics … here are just some of them.

He was sitting quietly, outside the library, waiting for someone.
He was a bit taken aback to be approached but said yeah sure enthusiastically, if not a little quizzically. As soon as I took the shot, his friend arrived and I left him explaining to her what had just happened.
This is Toro.
